There is no direct conversion of .dmg to .vmdk guest container solution. You designate the container type within VirtualBox before you start the installation of El Capitan (direct download link from Apple's servers) from its converted .iso binary. If you were using Parallel's Desktop, it could install El Capitan directly from the .dmg installer.
Note Well: Apple requires that any OS X/macOS guest is run exclusively on Apple branded hardware. Using it on any other platform is a violation of Apple's license agreement with you.
